When to convert PNG to BMP

BMP is an uncompressed bitmap format still required by some legacy Windows applications, embedded and industrial equipment, and printer or scanner drivers that predate modern compressed formats. Converting PNG to BMP unpacks PNG's DEFLATE-compressed pixel data into raw, uncompressed form — no additional quality is lost in the process, since PNG is already lossless, but the file grows substantially because BMP stores every pixel without any encoding efficiency. The most important tradeoff is transparency: standard BMP does not support an alpha channel in the vast majority of real-world software, so any transparent or semi-transparent areas in your PNG are flattened to a solid black background during conversion, and that change can't be reversed. If your PNG has a transparent logo, check the output before relying on it, since the flattened background may not match where the BMP is used. There's no compression benefit here at all; BMP files are routinely 3-10x larger than the PNG they came from. Use this conversion only when a legacy system explicitly requires BMP input — for everyday use, PNG remains the better choice.
