When to convert WebP to JPG

WebP's efficient compression makes it the right choice for web delivery, but plenty of software still can't open it: older email clients, some desktop photo viewers, many print shops, and a fair number of CMS or e-commerce plugins expect a JPG. Converting WebP to JPG trades WebP's superior compression efficiency for that universal compatibility — JPG has been the baseline photo format since the 1990s and virtually nothing rejects it. Because both formats are lossy, this conversion is a re-encode: the WebP is decoded to full pixel data and then compressed again using JPG's DCT algorithm, so expect a small amount of additional generation loss on top of whatever the original compression already introduced. If your WebP file carries transparency (WebP supports alpha even in lossy mode), that transparency is discarded — JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas become a solid background color. File size usually increases somewhat compared to the WebP source. Use the quality slider to balance size against fidelity; 85-95% is a safe range for photos meant for print or archiving. Skip this conversion if the image is staying on the web, where WebP's smaller footprint is the whole point.
