Why convert BMP to PNG

BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, so converting to PNG is close to a strict upgrade: PNG's DEFLATE compression finds redundancy in the raw pixel data and removes it losslessly, typically cutting file size dramatically — a 10 MB BMP commonly becomes 2-4 MB as PNG — without discarding a single pixel of image quality. There's no compression artifact tradeoff to weigh here the way there is with JPG, because PNG never throws away data; what you see in the BMP is exactly what you get in the PNG, just packaged more efficiently. Standard BMP files don't carry a usable alpha channel, so the source has no transparency to begin with, but the resulting PNG fully supports one — useful if you plan to add transparency later in an image editor. PNG is also far more broadly supported for editing and web use than BMP: every browser, design tool, and content platform handles PNG natively, while BMP support outside Windows and legacy software is spotty. The only reason to hesitate is if some downstream tool specifically requires uncompressed BMP input; otherwise there's essentially no downside, and it's the natural first step before publishing a BMP-sourced image anywhere modern.
