How background removal works
LocalPix runs a background-removal AI model directly in your browser through WebAssembly — there is no server step and no upload. The first time you use the tool, the model (about 40 MB) downloads and is cached by your browser, so every run after that starts immediately. The model separates the subject from its background and writes a PNG with a real alpha channel, which is why the output is always PNG: it is the only widely supported format here that can carry transparency. This suits product photos for online stores, profile pictures, logos that need to sit on coloured backgrounds, and any image headed for a design tool. You can feed it JPG, PNG, WebP or BMP up to 50 MB per file, and up to 100 megapixels or 16,384 pixels per side. Results are strongest when the subject stands clearly apart from the background; fine hair, motion blur, or a subject the same colour as what is behind it are where any model of this kind struggles most.
